For those living along the coast<\/strong><\/em>, one unusual phenomenon capable of catastrophic<\/strong> destruction is the tsunami (pronounced \u201ctsoo-NAH-mee\u201d). A tsunami is a series of waves generated <\/strong><\/em>in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance<\/strong><\/em>. Earthquakes, landslides<\/strong><\/em>, volcanic eruptions, explosions<\/strong><\/em>, and even the impact <\/strong>of meteorites can generate tsunamis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Starting at sea, a tsunami slowly approaches <\/em><\/strong>land, growing in height and losing energy through bottom friction <\/em><\/strong>and turbulence<\/strong><\/em>. Still, just like any other water waves, tsunamis unleash <\/strong>tremendous <\/strong><\/em>energy as they plunge <\/strong>onto the shore<\/strong><\/em>. They have great erosion potential, stripping <\/strong><\/em>beaches of sand, undermining <\/strong><\/em>trees, and flooding hundreds of meters inland<\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To minimize the devastation <\/strong><\/em>of a tsunami, scientists are constantly trying to anticipate them more accurately and more quickly.
